chopper 2 down at 880 and 237. highway patrol says just before 11:00 this morning, a car crashed into center median and caught fire. we have confirmed that one person inside that car has died. again, it happened to the south bound 880 off ramp to 237. you can see the traffic backed up in the area and miles beyond the connector ramp from 237 to south bound 880 is closed and is expected to stay closed at least another hour. california gas prices jump $.20 overnight and in many spots, $5 bill will get you just one gallon of gas. it may not even get you that in the coming days. live in san jose with reaction from the roadways. >> reporter: we're here at this gas station where it costs 4.63 a gallon for regular unleaded. that's the higher side because

the record was set in june 2008 when the average was 4.59 a gallon. we are poised to break that average next week. prices are getting closer to $5. it's no surprise that it is not sitting well with drivers. according to the fuel gauge report the average price of regular unleaded a week ago was $4.16 a gallon. yesterday it was $4.38. overnight it increased to $4.54 a gallon. >> funny that the prices are going up with the election four weeks away. i don't know what's going on. >> reporter: analysts say it stem from his supply problems, refine era is still producing at reduced capacity. gasoline inventories have been at the lowest in more than ten years. drivers say they feel powerless. >> as a consumer, you know, you hope the price you pay is based

on the market driven mechanism rather than somebody trying to jackup the price. >> there is a lot of reserves around. i don't know why they continue do this. blaming it on production and shut down refineries and problem with the gas lines. >> reporter: analysts say this price hike isn't normal. usually prices go down after labor day because gas stations switch to less expensive gas than what is used during summer. >> this is a short term trend. gas prices are going up because of specific issues. until the issues are resolved within refineries we still do not know for how long we will continue to see increase. >> reporter: gas station owners are in los angeles have shut down pumps rather than charging higher prices so they could break even. reporting live from san jose,. >> thank you for that report. you can track the latest gas

prices on our website and click on the business tab at the top and scroll down to consumer news. new job figures were released. analysts say they are much better than expected according to the labor department. u.s. economy generated 114,000 new jobs in september, job less rate is 7.8%, down 3/10 of a percent from august and lowest since january ever 2009. a separate report shows 873,000 people reported finding new jobs last month. election news, jobs report is the main topic on the campaign trail. drop in unemployment puts rate at its lowest level since president obama took office. the president said declining jobless rate is a sign "we are moving forward again." he says it is evidence that the economic policies are working. >> today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few

political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. [ cheering and applause ] >> mr. obama also said after losing 800,000 jobs a month when he took office, businesses have now added 5.2 million new jobs over the past two and a half years. republican presidential candidate mitt romney is also campaigning in virginia and says the drop in the unemployment rate is insignificant and not a sign of what he calls real economic recovery. romney says the president really made the economy worse according to governor romney, the numbers are deceptive in part because some people have quit looking for work. >> the truth is if the same share of people were participating in the workforce today as on the day the president got elected unemployment rate would be around 11%. that's the real reality of what's happening out there. >> romney is backtracking on

controversial remarks dismissing 47% of americans who don't pay federal income taxes. in an interview last night on fox news he said the comments were "just completely wrong." firefighters quickly knocked out a brush fire in a homeless area today. it started about 8:30 just a few blocks north east of the 880/101 split. firefighters kept it from spending beyond the homeless incampment. -- america's cup races are this weekend along with a lot more. all those crowds mean a little extra planning to get around. >> san francisco will be practically over run this weekend. about 40,000 people will be watching the america's cup races. fresh off their division clench

a tragedy like this from happening again. take a close look at the mexican free tail bat because this is the type of bat authorities say lead to the death of the 34 year old man. >> between up to 200 bats are found positive each year. >> reporter: health officials say the victim likely got rabies when he touched a bat found on the ground in march. >> a bat was flopping on the ground and acting weird. another individual picked up the bat with a plastic bag. the gentleman who died of rabies went over and stuck his hand in the plastic bag and most likely was bitten. >> reporter: rabies symptoms don't usually show up until two to six months later and three months after the incident the victim started developing symptoms while traveling abroad. 23 days later he died. >> once symptoms develop, rabies is universally fatal. the key is if you have been ex

posed to a wild animal, if you are concerned about having saliva contacted or being bitten by a wild animal, seek medical attention immediately. >> reporter: the 34 year old victim who has not been identified traveled on eight flights through several countries, 59 have been identified as possibly being exposed, 23 have been treated. officials say theoretically it is possible to get rabies from another person through saliva or tears but the message was focused on letting people know about our area and california. three tested positive for rabies this year. while a bat bite can feel like a bee sting, this man's story is a reminder that rabies, especially after those symptoms come, is almost always deadly. play off fever today in san francisco as giants hold a rally outside of att park, what the team is doing to get fans fired up before the post season.

a woman in custody after leading deputies on a wild chase. she ran several red lights on east 14th last night. once she got to the end of the street she turned around and went the other way. she was stopped and arrested at 61st avenue. the chase lasted nearly a half hour. a's have grabbed headlines but now play off fever is burning up on the other side of the bay. happening now, a rally for giants is underway at 24 willy mays plaza. alex, what's happening? >> reporter: willy mays plaza packed with fans, all of them have their rally towels and are ready to go. they're calling this orange friday rally, everyone geared up for the post season as you can imagine, fans decked out in orange and black, several

hundred on hand outside of att park this afternoon. giants open up play offs at home tomorrow against cincinnati reds, the game is tomorrow. game 2 as well on sunday. giants headed back to post season or play offs for the first time since they won world series in 2010. fans are excited. one woman we talked to even had her hair painted in honor of the giants. >> got the orange, white, black, i'm ready. i'm ready. >> you're pumped up? >> yes. i'm ready for a good season, post season. they're going win again. >> reporter: you are guaranteeing it? >> yes, of course. it's a repeat of 2010. >> come down here, get some stuff, get geared up for the game, get all excited, you know. get ready for the play offs. >> reporter: this will be a huge weekend also for the bars and restaurants near att park. we watched as workers were preparing for the crush of giants fans expected this

weekend. businesses bring in extra employee to his handle the crowds. we stopped by tres bar and restaurant a block away. the head chef told us he expects to win as many as 4 times as many tacos as normal. >> we are expecting 1000 people saturday and i don't know how many sunday. from what we learned from the play offs people come in and stay all day. a lot of them don't have tickets but want to be part of the game. >> reporter: the giants aren't the only bay area baseball team headed to the post season. remember the oakland a's, al west division champions. they begin their run through play offs tomorrow playing in detroit tomorrow afternoon against detroit tigers. of course a lot of folks out here at att park secretly i think pulling a little bit for oakland a's, maybe because they want a repeat of the bay bridge series from 1989. live outside att park in san

68 to san rosa, 71 in nap pa. a look at the satellite radar, here is the system here sending all the clouds overhead for today and into your weekend. this low will continue to migrate closer to the coast and eventually we may see a few sprig ales by monday and tuesday. for your weekend including today, cooler pattern in place with temperatures from 3, 6, to 10 degrees below normal. the clouds will be with us in and out. we have winds picking up 10 to 20 miles per hour with on shore breeze continuing through your weekend. if you are headed to the bluegrass festival bundle up. for fleet week, partly cloudy skies for afternoon, low 60s. for the giants, upper 50s saturday and sunday. 49ers will play sunday with temperatures holding onto mid 60s by the afternoon, partly cloudy skies expected there.

for your afternoon friday 72. it sure feels like fall. it is 69 at oakland, 74 for dan ville. to the south temperatures are 75. along peninsula for your afternoon, 68, 72 redwood city, 66 in san francisco, low 60s with partly cloudy skies at the coast. there is the extended forecast with temperatures cooling for the weekend. monday into tuesday again our best shot at maybe a few sprinkles there in forecast. >> thanks. we have breaking news out of heyward where neighbors say a shooting investigation is going on near vanderbuilt and briar gateway. news chopper 2 is arriving on scene and giving us live pictures. you can see police officers down on the scene right now. residents so far heyward police say have not confirmed the shooting. you can see that police officers are at this interception.

residents in the area say they did hear gun shots a short time ago and were told by an officer on the scene that an investigation is indeed underway. if we learn anything more here in the next ten minutes we will bring it to you. of course we'll a complete report for you on the channel 2 news at 5:00. american airlines canceling more flights today. shaky unstable seats causing hundreds to rebook on this get away day.

live look at the board, dow jones up a little over 23 points, fairly flat today although all three major indexes are on pace for a positive week. if you are flying american, you may want to check the status of your flight before heading out to the airport. airline is canceling dozens of flights to fix seats that have been coming loose while in the air. american says it's canceled 44 flights today, 50 flights were canceled yesterday. the airline says all planes should be back in service tomorrow. so far, we have found out that two american flights out of san francisco international early this morning, one heading to miami and two to orlando were canceled. while st. mary's is gearing up for a huge celebration, thousands are expected for the 150th anniversary. the event is being dubbed gail
